Why is Appropriate Courtroom Dress Essential in Buffalo, NY?

Posted by Daniel DuBois | Dec 07, 2022 | 0 Comments

Welcome back to the blog here at DuBois Law! We recently shared some tips on proper courtroom attire and what to wear when you're appearing before a judge and/or jury. Today, we wanted to share some of the reasons why that's the case.

If you find yourself facing the legal system, having an attorney on your side to fiercely defend your rights is key to preserving your innocence. Being a seasoned Buffalo defense firm, DuBois Law is uniquely positioned to get you the best outcome we can for your case. Today, let's take a step back and look at why the way you're dressed at court is so important.

It Helps Your First Impression

First impressions matter in the courtroom, just like they would in a job interview. The jury can't render judgment until all evidence has been presented, but they begin forming their perception about you the moment they lay eyes on you. And if your attire and presentation don't match the message you're conveying then the jury might not believe you, no matter how true your account may be.

Improper Dress May Make it Seems Like You Don't Care

Our Buffalo, NY lawyers may put together an excellent defense, but your attire can shoot the whole thing down. Clothes like sneakers, skinny jeans and/or a dirty t-shirt might convey the message you don't care about the verdict. It could make you seem guilty.

Show of Remorse

Sometimes a guilty plea needs to be entered to get the best outcome for your case. Being dressed formally could show the judge you're displaying remorse and lead to a lighter sentence if possible. However, being dressed informally and inappropriately can display the message that you don't care.
